The Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA), located in Stone Town, Zanzibar is known for its educational pursuits in promoting the music traditions of the countries that surround the Indian Ocean from which the dhows carried various commodities to the East African coast.The music traditions of the Arab Peninsula and other Indian Ocean locations and the Swahili coastline along Kenya and Tanzania are performed on instruments such as the oud, qanun and the dumbak and include singing/instrumental traditions of the famous taarab, poetry-song genre.
